Why gold businesses are flying blind
Most gold businesses track revenue. Very few track what drives it.
When I do an analytics audit on a new client's gold business, the most common finding is a surprisingly small amount of meaningful data. There's usually a basic Google Analytics account (often still UA, never migrated to GA4), no call tracking, no conversion events set up correctly, and reporting that amounts to "how much did we turn over this month".
That's fine for accounting. It's not fine for growth. If you can't tell which of your branches is generating the most online inquiries, which marketing channel is producing your highest-value customers, or what your lead-to-sale conversion rate is by inquiry source — you're making reinvestment decisions blind. And in a business where gold prices and customer behaviour shift month to month, that's an expensive way to operate.
The KPIs that actually matter for gold businesses
Here's the KPI framework we install for gold businesses. These aren't generic business metrics — they're specific to how cash-for-gold and bullion operations generate and lose revenue.
- Inbound calls per branch, per week — tracked to source
- Web inquiry submissions by location page
- Google Maps views and direction requests (GBP insights)
- Review velocity — new reviews per month per location
- Organic traffic by service keyword cluster
- Inquiry-to-appointment conversion rate by channel
- Appointment-to-transaction rate by branch
- Average transaction value by customer type
- Quote response time (target: under 5 minutes)
- Lead-to-close time in days
- Cost per lead by channel (SEO vs paid vs social)
- Keyword ranking positions — tracked weekly
- Click-through rate on GMB and local pack
- Email open and click rates by campaign type
- Social reach and inquiry-driven traffic
- Transaction volume per branch per week
- Refiner settlement time and yield percentage
- Cash flow cycle: buy → refine → pay
- Staff response time to CRM-assigned leads
- Customer re-transaction rate (repeat sellers)
What we build and how it works
-
1Analytics audit — find what's missingWe audit your current tracking setup: GA4 configuration, conversion event firing, call tracking status, CRM data quality, and attribution accuracy. Most audits find at least 4–6 critical data gaps that are causing misleading reporting.
-
2GA4 configuration and conversion trackingFull GA4 setup or audit — events, conversions, audiences, and channel groupings configured for a gold business. Phone call conversions, form submissions, direction requests, and chat events all tracked and attributed correctly.
-
3Call tracking integrationEvery phone number becomes a tracked source. We know whether that call came from Google Maps, organic search, a paid ad, or a social post. For multi-location operations, each branch has a dedicated tracked number with full call recording for quality and training purposes.
-
4Custom Looker Studio dashboard buildA single executive dashboard that pulls data from GA4, Search Console, your CRM, call tracking, and any paid platforms — updated daily. No more pulling data from five different places. One view, all the numbers that matter, accessible on any device.
-
5Branch-level performance reportingFor multi-location gold buyers, a branch-comparison report that shows — in a single view — how each location is performing on leads, conversion, transaction volume, and review velocity. Branch managers see their own data. Directors see everything.
Common questions
-
The most important KPIs fall into four categories: lead generation (inbound calls, web inquiries, walk-ins per branch), conversion (inquiry-to-appointment rate, appointment-to-sale rate, average transaction value), marketing (organic traffic, Google Maps ranking, review velocity), and operations (quote response time, refiner settlement speed). Most businesses only track total revenue — which tells you what happened but not why, or what to do about it.
-
For most cash-for-gold businesses, we configure GA4 for website and traffic data, Google Search Console for organic visibility, a call tracking platform for phone inquiry attribution, and Looker Studio for a unified executive dashboard. For multi-location operations, we add branch-level reporting that lets owners compare performance across locations without pulling spreadsheets.
-
A basic GA4 configuration with call tracking and a core KPI dashboard typically takes 2 to 3 weeks. A full analytics stack with GA4, Search Console, call tracking, CRM integration, and a custom Looker Studio dashboard with branch-level reporting takes 4 to 6 weeks. The dashboard is live and populating with data from day one of setup — you don't wait until everything is finished before you start seeing numbers.
